Chris Dorn: A Legacy of Fire Protection Excellence
Chris Dorn’s journey into the world of fire sprinkler systems began at just 10 years old, working alongside his father in the family business. From summers spent fabricating pipes and organizing materials to mastering every role in the office and the field, Chris developed a deep, hands-on understanding of the fire sprinkler industry from the ground up.
In 1991, Chris began working full-time in the field, installing sprinkler systems and honing his fire safety and prevention expertise in drafting and design. He earned multiple fire safety certifications through the National Institute for Certification of Engineering Technologies (NICET), including:
Level I in Special Hazards Suppression Systems
The Special Hazards Systems certification program is designed for engineering technicians engaged in the design and layout and/or installation and maintenance related to special hazards suppression systems. Technical areas covered include knowledge of physical science and mathematics, elements of electricity and electronics, fire suppression agents, fire protection devices, hydraulic flow of various agents, systems installation, servicing and maintenance, applicable codes and insurance authority standards, and contract interpretation and preparation
Level IV in Sprinkler Design
Chris Dorn successfully completed NICET’s comprehensive sprinkler design training program. This training focused on key design principles, including preparing plans and submittals, selecting equipment, and laying out sprinkler systems. It also covered critical processes such as installation, inspection, and maintenance to ensure proper system functionality. The program provided an in-depth understanding of applicable codes and standards, contract administration, and the latest industry research and updates. To prepare participants for certification, it included online practice tests to familiarize them with exam content and the testing interface.
Level II in Sprinkler Inspections and Testing
Chris Dorn successfully completed NICET’s certification program for engineering technicians specializing in the inspection and testing of existing fire alarm systems and their components. This program focuses on the performance, documentation, planning, and coordination of periodic inspections and testing, excluding the commissioning of new systems. Key topics include inspection and testing procedures, scheduling, documentation, safety practices, and work management.
The technical training covers a range of fire alarm systems and their components, including device-specific test procedures for initiating devices, notification appliances, supervisory signals, power supplies, emergency communication equipment, and system interfaces. It also addresses on-premises and off-premises monitoring. This certification reflects Chris’s expertise in ensuring fire alarm systems remain reliable and compliant through thorough testing and maintenance.
As a certified sprinkler designer in Ohio and Kentucky and a State of Ohio licensed technician, Chris is qualified to service, test, and repair a wide array of fire protection systems.
